Went on a road trip.... Literally we were on the road for days pedaling our bikes. It was awesome. This was the sunset the first night, and the scenery only got better from there.The trip started in Burley with Ingrid Hansen and Brittany Gunderson. After two days the rest of the crowd showed up just outside of Stanley. Salomon, Jared, Stephanie, and Bridgette. Oh and I can't forget Ingrid's sweet mother and her sister Greta. They drove a support vehicle for the three days and carried all of our gear. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who loves biking. The scenery was amazing the entire way. The ride had a little of everything, big uphills, long downhills, long flats, and everything in between. Part of the road even seemed like a slalom course. After about 270 miles the trip came to an end in Idaho City, just a short ways out of Boise. Everyone survived and we only saw a few small scrapes and bruises. Oh I almost forgot to add, we did see a black bear. In fact I wasn't to far from hitting it with my bike!
Hopefully this can become an annual trip now that we have a better idea of how it will go. Thanks to everyone that made this happen, the support vehicles were a huge blessing and the extra food was more than I ever could have asked for.

Day hiking table rock was awesome. I had never done it. Now I can join the ranks of..... well everyone else. It Seemed like everyone I have talked to has done it it before except for me till now. It was a great hike and only took about five hours round-trip.

This summer has gone by so fast I have barely had time to update my blog. I am proud to say that looking back on the last two months I have done a number of fun things with the free time I had available. The following pictures were all taken on Island Park Reservoir. This was my first time attempting wake surfing and it was a blast.

The Rainey Creek trail in Swan Valley is usually pretty dry this time of year apart from a few small stream crossings. But as the late snow has kept the stream much larger late into the year, the trail is still pretty mucky. The first two miles or so of the trail show little to no dry ground at all. I think we could have ridden it more like a slip 'n' slide for most of the way out. It sure did make for a fun ride though. Just don't wear clothes you want to keep clean if you go to ride this trail.

These are a few pictures from the summer summit backpacking trip. The trip was amazing! We hiked for eleven days through the Boulder White Cloud Mountains. I had never really spent any measurable amount of time there prior to this trip. Peak after jagged granite peak surrounded us throughout the entire hike. This mountain range really reminded me of the Wind Rivers in Wyoming, partially because of the peaks but also because of the immense number of crystal clear mountain lakes. Around every corner lakes seemed to pop out of thin air. The only down side to this was that all the standing water provided a perfect breeding ground for hoards of bloodthirsty mosquitoes. I used an entire bottle of repellent myself by the end of the trip. Most of the lakes were full of fish as well, the average being about five inches long. We caught several every time we stopped to fish. In some places we would catch fish four or even five casts in a row.

A few lakes such as quiet lake and Cove Lake provided fish large enough to make a descent meal. But we had at least a couple fish to supplement our Mountain House dinners every night. In Cove lake we caught some fish by noodling (with our hands). Sadly I don't have pictures of this yet but hopefully I will soon. The fish there were beautiful Cutthroat trout with bright red bellies. By the end of the trip I had caught 130 fish in total and Bret had caught just a few less, which won me a free cheeseburger I might add.

It was almost sad to leave when we finally got back to the van, though I was eager to use a warm shower and some soap. Life was so simple camping. Each day we just had to accomplish our hike and after that there was nothing to worry about past cooking our dinner. There were no deadlines, no to-do lists, no people to impress, no curfews, or even the need to look at our watches. My only timeline for the trip was when the sun came up and went down. Sometimes I wish life at home could be the same. Stress levels around the world would be so much lower, sadly not as much would get done, but maybe we spend to much time worrying about getting things done that really aren't worth doing. I think we could all do with a little simplification in our lives.

Crack Climbing at the Teton Dam. This route is really a 20' V2 bouldering problem, but since I only had one crash pad and the crux was near the top we decided to just use a cam and a rope as a safety backup. Heidi and Cammi both destroyed the route (which is a good thing). There was a lot of stinging nettle growing at the bottom. I chopped a bunch of it out, but I think it grows pretty fast so be aware if you are bouldering there.

24,000 CFS!!! That's a lot of water to be going through such a narrow canyon. Dan, Susie, Allison, Eric. John, Jessica, Eva, Izzy, and even little Debbie. I have only guided this trip a handful of times in a raft, usually I would be in a kayak. It's always a fun experience rafting with a big bunch of friends. The water was roughly the color and thickness of chocolate milk, and close to the temperature of a milkshake. Fortunately only one person got thrown from the raft. Sadly for Patux it was him. I was a bit concerned when he disappeared I'm sure Patux would agree it seemed like he was under for a lot longer than he actually was. All told he was only gone a few seconds but it was enough to get me to wonder if he was going to come back up at all. The rest of the ride was less eventful but still a blast.

The Nauvoo Temple was amazing! Sadly we didn't have time to attend a session there, but all of Nauvoo was beautiful, not to mention the weather was perfect. This picture of Joseph and Hyrum looking at the temple was my favorite picture of the trip. It was sad to know that they never did see the temple finished while they were alive. But the portion of the temple that was finished was one of the last things they ever did see outside of Carthage Jail.

So pictured above is one of my typical lunches at work. Sometimes i wonder what is really in this stuff. Has anyone else ever noticed how badly spaghettios stain the bowl??? What does that do to my stomach! Are my insides permanently stained that unnatural orange color? does any of this mean i will stop eating them??? of course not! i love spaghettios and probs will to the day i die.... hopefully the spaghettios don't make that sooner than later.

This photo basically sums up all the early mornings of practice we had as a team. It was fun while it lasted but not fun enough to do again. I don't think I was really cracked up to be a coach.
My JV team looked strong through the season but saw its demise in the second round of the tournament. The one consellation I can take from this season was that the team as a whole got leaps and bounds better than it was when we started. Looking back our first game ended with us losing by about 25... (the game was only 20 minutes long!) By the end of the season we could beat or hold our own against any of the other teams. Here's my salute to you Ankles and Dragonslayer. Thanks for the good times and the bad.

We biked from rexburg to provo the long way. This was at the top of bald mt pass. 10,700 feet! We then went downhill for over an hour without pedalling it was an amazing break. In total the trip was 425 miles long and took six days. im actually sad that it is over but extremely happy that i dont have to sit on my bike seat. Four days after the trip and im still wanting an extra pillow to sit on

Cruising around the sand dunes in the jeep has been a lot of fun. I was never hue motorized sports but i really enjoy this for some reason. We also had the stereotypical byui student bonfire and played in the sand. All together it was a good night apart from the small crack i found in my radiator. Thats the second one this year!

It only took about a week for my face to heal. All of the road rash went away incredibly fast! There is still a visible gash on my eyebrow but it is mostly covered by my eyebrow.

More car problems.... Dan and i were bahaing through some snow. It started to get too deep so i decided to back up. We were moving along great and then all the sudden i heard a loud clunk clunk clunk. Sure enough the cv joint completly broke in half on my right front tire. I think it will be covered by the warranty but i wont know for sure till monday. Its fun to have the jeep. The other day i was just pullin in to jack and the box and two guys with big offroad vehicles saw and randomly pulled in to talk to me about the jeep.

The other day i was cruizing around a corner in te Burg when out of the blue the differential lock slipped on a for a second. it brought one of my tires up off the ground and after it landed i noticed a weird ticking noise. when i got to where i was going I walked around the back of the jeep and noticed this. My shock had popped out and had been dragging on the ground! I still have no idea how it came undone. Part of the bracket that holds it on is broken, i was able to jack it up and bolt it back on but i will probs need to get a new bracket for it before i do any real offroading again.

The other day my church history class used a replica of the grandin press to print the first page of the Book of Mormon. That would have been a lot of work to do the entire Book of Mormon! It was interesting to see how many of the phrases we say today came from people working in printing presses. Such as, "make a good impression". This is the page that I got to print. I also learned that an original 1830 Edition of he Book of Mormon would sell for over $100,000 if it was still in good condition!!! Crazy!

Well its been a while since my last post. A lot has happened innthe last month. So I will make a briefe summary of the most outstanding events that occured.
Jo and I spent Christmas in El Paso. We had a a good time and went to Carlsbad caverns the day after Christmas. It was a fun spur of the moment trip. We were on our way out Hueco Tanks to go bouldering with some friends and I noticed a sign for Carlsbad caverns. I mentioned to Jo that it would have been fun to go there since it was so close. To my surprise she said, "lets go". So we called our friends and then redirected our couse to Carlsbad Caverns. It was a littl over two hours away. It was a fun trip barring a small incident involving the jumping off spot..... which i'm sure will be the source of many a joke in the future. It was great to be able to go on such a spontaneous trip, I love when plans are flexible like that.
Jo also made me a really cool wallet, a hemp shell necklace, bought me a harmonica holder, and to top it off paid for a flight lesson as you saw in a previous post.
Eentually it came time to leave the sunny land of the south and head back home. On the way back to the froen tundra I met up with my family to have a small reunion near las vegas. We campen for a few day in valley of fire state park. There were tons of petroglyphs there. I will be posting some pics here pretty soon. On the way home from nevada we stopped in at Jo's house to pick up her motorcycle and eneded up having a late Christmas dinner with her family. It was kinda funny. My parents seemed like kids, in fact my parents may have been young enought to be Jo's parents' children.
Upon returning home I quickly packed my bags and headed off to start school at BYU-I.
After a week of introductions the weekend finally came and I drove out to Utah to go skiing with Jo, Brian, and Sterling. It was a lot of fun, we went a short distance up Cottonwood Canyon and snowshoed up a mountain. The next day was filled between church and repairing detox machines.
My second week of school has been filled with homework. So far I feel I will be able to do well in all of my classes. If I work hard I should be able to get a 4.0. My hardest class might prove to be my church history class.

This was my first flying lesson. I've talked a lot about becoming a pilot some day but I haven't done much in the way of working towards that end. Fortunately for me, my wonderfully thoughtful girlfriend Jo, set up an intro flight lesson for me as an early Christmas present. How awesome is that!!! During the lesson I got to do all of the basic things except for land and take off. Which are maybe just a little important, but now I know that if I had to fly a plane I would at least have some clue about what I was doing. The best part is that the lesson counted towards getting my pilot's license. Jo got me an official log book and everything! Now I just need to crack down and get going. I would love to finish some time this upcoming year if I could. By finish I mean the private pilot's license. Unless money starts to fall from the sky or I run into some incredible opportunity, then I would go for it all.

Well, if you read my last post you would know that I was a little stressed out about working so much. That will no longer be a concern. Unfortunatley it didn't just die down to a happy medium. I was laid off this morning! Apparently the crew working on the normandy fence finished so there were a bunch of extra opperators with nothing to do. So they gave my job to one of them because they had seniority over me. Sucks doesn't it? But all things considered it really isn't that bad, I was going to quit in about ten days anyway. I will just need to find a little extra money somewhere for school. At first I thought it was funny because I am supposed to give a talk in church on Sunday and they were going to make me work. So maybe this is God telling me that I really need to go to church and give that talk. I've never skipped out on one before so I guess this was a good thing. With all this free time I was able to meet some people that climb. There is a pretty good crowd of guys that climb in the university ward but I have never gone with any of them because I was always working. Today I went climbing with a guy named Manny. I think if I had more time here I coud start a pretty good sized climbing group.

Work has been a little hectic as of late. They want us to work every day till the job is finished. And that may not be until Christmas Eve. I figured if they wont give me the time off I need before Christmas I will just quit a few days earlier than I had planned. Then I might even have a chance to use the state parks pass I bought down here. I guess I can't complain about the money. But sometimes I just don't feel like it is worth it. Especially when they made me work on Sunday. It kinda put me in a weird funk. I will need all I can get for school. I figure by the time I quit I should have at least two thousand saved up so I will still need some type of income during school to get by without starving to death. But it will definitely be a good starter. Jo and I went on a fun little trip the other day. I got off a little early so we went to Franklin Mountain State park and paid the camping fee so we could stay and climb after the park gates got closed. It ended up being a lot of fun, we also got to do a small mountain bike loop in the dark with our headlamps. Dinner was kinda funny because neither of us brought a camp stove, so we heated up our burritos on the engine of her truck and then we did some using her defrost on full blast. It must have been over a hundred degrees in the truck. We also watched a movie called The Bridge to Teribithia, don't watch it. I laughed five times more during the previews before the movie started than I did while watching the movie. It end up being a corny drama. We had to get up really early and bust a move out of the park so I could make it to work on time, but it all worked out pretty smooth.

For Thanksgiving Jo and I drove to Phoenix picked up Brian and then cruised to California for thanksgiving dinner. Thanksgivng was spent with my brother's wife's extended family. It was a fun trip we got to do everything from go to the beach, Knotsberry Farm, rock climbing and even REI. I think the last one may have been our longest stop. It was a killer road trip. The way back went considerably smoother than the way there, no rainstorms, broken headlights, or having to drive at three in the morning.

I finally got a job err... Jo got me a job. Working as a water truck driver for the contruction crew building the border fence. The pay is great and i get tons of overtime. So i should be able to save up enough to pay for school this winter. The best part is Jo works at the same place as a biological field monitor. So i get to have my lunch break with her some times. This is a picture of the giant truck i drive. It has an 8000 gallon water tank! The schedule is a bit of a dewsey! I have to get up at 4a.m. and i usually get off at about 5p.m.

Jo, William her brother, and I went on a weekend retreat in Arizona. It was a pretty cool place. The only downside was that every plant there had vicious thorns. Long pants would be highly recommended for any hikes off the beaten path. We did a little climbing but it looked like we could have spent several days climbing there. Its was about four hours West of El Paso. We had a lot of fun playing music around the campfire( which I guess we were not supposed to have, but oh well).

I am sooooo glad that the election is over with. Now that no one has to worry about spending their time badmouthing the other guy we can get to work on adressing the country's issues. I'm happy with the way the elecion turned out. It really has been a very special election. Women contending for the presidential office, for the Vice presidential position, and to put icing on the cake an African American actually winning the election. By the way I loved his acceptance speach. I thought he did an excellent job trying to unify the parties.

Racoons and unemployment

The last week has been pretty adventurous! It is crazy to think that just last week I was in Jackson Wyoming. Now I am settled in an appartment jsut a hop skip and a jump from the mexico border. About the whole racoon thing. Last Saturday I was camped in Hueco Tanks state park with my father and brother, at about three in the morning a small possy of coons invaded our camp. One of them very nearly walked over my sleeping bag, while I was sill in it I might add. The best part was that the driver side window of my car was not rolled up all the way so one of he racoons managed to squeeze hs way in and dig through my car. Fortunatley we were awake when ths happen so we chased him out pretty quick. Nothing was safe fro m their sticky little fingers. They continued to come back throughout the morning, on one of there advances they managed to undo the zipper on my duffle bag and tried to make off with some batteries. All in all it was a funny and educational experience.
On Staurday I moved into my new place. It is pretty nice, there is even a hot tub, though I don't expect to be using it much if it doesn't get a little cooler here. It was over 80 degrees today. The other nice thing about it is that I only live about five minutes away from Jo. It is also close enough to everything, so I can walk or ride my bike to the bank, grocerie store, restaraunts, slurpees (yeah, there are 7 elevens everywhere!), and even a mall, not that I have ever been much for hangin out at the mall but its there if I ever decide to be. Right now I am just trying to find a job. Hence the unemployment thing. The contracting companies that are building the border fence are hiring and they pay really well. I have applied at two of them, but wont hear back until next week. If niether of them work out I will probs opt for a job close to my appartment. Big 5 or the Home Depot wouldn't be so bad and I would have no gas costs.

We went to carlsbad caverns on the way down to El Paso. They were much laregr than I was expecting. we walked on a path for several miles, and we only saw a very small portion of the cave. In some places the cieling was over 300' feet high! A lot of it looked like something you would see in a movie that was supposed to be in space. I'd bet a good number of movies have been filmed there.

Today was the first real snowday of the season. Or at least the first time it has stuck. It makes me wonder, when is global warming actually going to make the world warmer? And if it does would that really be all that bad? Maybe the south would become unbearable, but lets be honest they haven't had very good luck with weather anyway. It seems like they get hit by a hurricane every year! And i know there is plenty of room up in canada, they could all go up there, and we would all be better off for it.

Last night was B-rads last night in jackson. so we went climbing for a whole hour before it got too dark. We went to blacktail butte. It was fun but the one climb we did was a little scary.... The first bolt was twice as high as i would've liked and a lot of the holds were slopers. Like B-rad I've also decided that I don't really want to be here for the winter, which started today! With snow and everything. I even made a snowball today. I mean I love skiing but what happened to Halloween and thanksgiving, we just skipped right through to christmas weather. So i'm quiting my job here and heading to New mexico where the root beer is sweet and the pillows are oh so fluffy!(Lyrics from a song...) And of course Jo is there. Oh I also heard back from Byu-i the other day and I got accepted so I will be starting school in january. I am excited to be learning again I feel like I have been a little stagnant for a while. I mean I have learned plenty of valuable lessons in the last year but not too many that will help me with future careers or look good on resumes.

On thursday I drove to utah to spend some time with jo before she had to leave for New Mexico. We almost went hiking and went to a renunion for my mission. It was kinda strange to see everybody not in missionary attire. On saturday I met up with zach at the quarry and climbed until I couldnt hold on to the wall any more. While there we both top roped a 12a! The first one I have ever finished

This is my little jeep. It has been a lot of fun and may continue to be, but i Have officialy put it up for sale. The gas mileage just kills me too much right now. But if i can't get what i'm asking Then i wont sell it.
